Fundamentals of Generating High Voltage Levels in AC/DC Power Systems

This course is designed for electrical engineers and students who want to learn the fundamentals of generating different high voltage levels in AC/DC power systems. 8 lectures in 3h 43m total course length.

Course Decription

This course is designed for electrical engineers and students who want to learn the fundamentals of generating different high voltage levels in AC/DC power systems.

Power frequency voltage and current (AC): In an AC network the equipment is continuously subjected to full power frequency voltage. The equipment should therefore be able to withstand power normal frequency voltage, allowing for some overvoltage.

Direct current (DC): DC tests are used mainly to do “pressure tests” on high voltage cables. Although the cables operate with AC, AC testing is not practical. The high capacitance of the cables necessitates AC test sets with a high kVA rating to be able to supply the capacitive current. In the case of DC, once the cable is charged, only the losses have to be supplied.

Lightning and switching impulses: The power system is also subjected to single overvoltage pulses, due to lightning and switching. In the field, these transients can take on many different wave shapes.

The following topics are covered:

  1. Types of high voltages occurring in an electrical system.
  2. Methods used to generate high voltage AC at power frequency.
  3. How to generate high voltage AC at high frequency for simulating switching actions on our electrical equipment.
  4. Definition of impulse waveform in the electrical system.
  5. Methods of generating high voltage impulses to test our equipment.
  6. Different methods used to generate very high DC voltage in electrical systems in addition to voltage double circuits and multiplier circuits.
