Capacitor applications
There are many other applications in the industry where capacitors are used for power factor correction or energy storage purposes. These include arc furnaces, resistance welding equipment, single-phase capacitor start, capacitor run motors, lighting applications and special applications of capacitors in EHV systems which are the subject of this article.
Applications are discussed for the following applications in extra high voltage (EHV) systems:
- Carrier Coupling Capacitor
- Line Trap Capacitors
- Capacitive Coupling Voltage Transformer (CCVT)
- Capacitors for Laboratory Applications
1. Carrier Coupling Capacitor
In power systems, overhead lines are used to transmit 60 Hz power and communication signals. The circuits used to transmit signals through the power circuits are called Carrier Communication. The frequency spectrum used in this type of communication is 30–500 kHz.
Since the power line is maintained for continuous operation, the maintenance cost of the carrier communication is low.
