Testing Substation Equipment
Testing equipment that has advanced features is accessible to protection engineers to optimize the performance of the power system. The advancement and use of cutting-edge tools make the testing failsafe and efficient in protecting expensive substation equipment. Consequently, ongoing technological adoption is crucial for all power engineers.

The malfunction of equipment results in the outage of transmission components and interruption of power delivery. Condition monitoring of equipment has become crucial to reduce the likelihood of equipment failure.
In recent years, new testing equipment has become available to field engineers. Numerical relays from various manufacturers have been included into the system. Since its inception, the handbook publisher has imparted testing processes to the next generation of engineers through practical training.
It has been observed that, despite the availability of modern smart kits for new engineers, they lack familiarity with the philosophy and significance of testing techniques.
Owing to insufficient expertise, critical elements of the kits and numerical relays have occasionally been overlooked.

To bridge the gap between established procedures and the handling of new smart kits, it is deemed necessary to provide a written document that provides accurate rules for equipment testing in a straightforward manner, serving as a reference for any uncertainties that may occur throughout the testing process.
Although electrical equipment is typically engineered for a lifespan of 25-35 years, failures have occurred prior to their predicted duration due to insufficient maintenance, as well as factors such as cheap materials, poor workmanship, manufacturing processes, environmental influences, and unforeseen continuous overvoltages.
