Description
Distance protection is the simplest type of protection that is widely used in electrical power systems. All the high voltage and extra-high voltage lines are equipped with a Distance Protection relay. Distance relaying is the art and science of the protection system, and therefore it is essential to understand and learn the working principle of overcurrent relays.
The course consists of 46 lessons in 5 hours. Complex topics of protection relays are covered and explained with straightforward explanations and various examples.
Distance relaying should be considered when overcurrent relaying is too slow or is not selective. Distance relays are generally used for phase-fault primary and backup protection on sub-transmission lines. They are also used for the protection of transmission lines where high-speed automatic reclosing is not necessary to maintain stability and where the short-time delay for end-zone faults can be tolerated.
Overcurrent relays have been used generally for ground-fault primary and backup protection, but there is also a growing trend toward distance relays for ground faults.
